Well, I don’t like to be so hyperbolic and cruel as to call someone a mental patient. But it’s seemed obvious to me for quite some time the bg has some kind of emotional desire to steer people in a certain direction, and that that desire sometimes results in her giving advice that has no basis in reality. I’d avoid the subject altogether, but I agree with you, Dave, that it’s important for people who come to this forum for advice to understand who’s giving clear-thinking, unbiased advice and who’s giving advice that reflects the personal issues that they have.
FWIW to you, zk, I’ve never resided north of I-8, so would have no propensity to steer anyone in a “certain direction.” OTOH, your “friend,” sdr, here, steers anyone and everyone who can read to his “gridlocked nirvana,” talking it up as if he works for the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, even if the commute will be mind-numbingly crushing for them. The only reason he hasn’t steered this OP there is because his beloved “turf” is out of his/her price range.
Perhaps you are not reading the OP’s current commute and desires here. He/she currently has zero commute and resides within an excellent school attendance area. Those were his/her main criteria. What’s not to understand?
Oh, and I don’t have any “personal issues” with MR because I myself have never paid any. However, I’ve seen more than a handful of homeowners lose their homes in part over these extra charges.

Well, the $380K smaller twinhome (but bigger private yard) UCGal posted has $303 monthly dues and the $365K unit in SR has $243 mo dues. $60 difference in dues but the gas and time savings are significant on the UC property. She also stated it’s in the Curie attendance area (API 950). I don’t know if the elem schools in SR can beat that.
Yes they can. Dingeman is one of those. And in Scripps is pretty easy to transfer between different elementary schools; all of them are very good. Jerabek is 935, Miramar Ranch (where the townhouses we talked about would go) is just over 900. Where SR schools surpass the UC ones are the middle (924 vs 860) and high school. UC high API is under 800, while SR high is 875, a significant difference IMO. Now, if that’s worth the extra commute, it’s up to each individual case. If equal house payments (+fees) in UC and SR and equal houses (size/age/rooms) – I may stay in UC for convenience. If I get more in terms of house, or lower payments in SR, I may be more inclined to choose SR… It all depends from case to case, what one likes and is comfortable to compromise…

My understanding is the OP IS willing to commute for a good deal on a larger house/good schools, that why s/he IS looking into SR and PQ. He didn’t say zero- to little commute is his MAIN criteria.I actually think that schools are the main criteria within his/her choices of areas.
And I would NOT call UC schools EXCELLENT, just good – Curie may be called excellent, but not Middle and HIgh.
If the OP cannot find something s/he likes in UC, or if s/he thinks the schools API differences are worth the commute, probably PQ is better bang for the buck than SR with schools almost as good as SR, IMO.
