Funny you should mention western union. The ASR-32 used Baudot code on its paper tape, which was adopted by Western Union. The ASR-33 used ASCI.

ucodegen, I’m there, too. My mom operated one of those, while I came home after school to watch “Tiny Tim” on TV . . . lol! Later, her employer got a newfangled “mag-card reader” and then a “Compugraphic” machine and my mom became their company magazine editor!!
btw: I still have several large reels of my “fav” music on Reel to Reel “high-fidelity” audiotape!!! Sold my heavy-duty Sony R-to-R player/recorder long ago in the U/T ads to a gentlemen in his sixties who was ecstatic to find a good one that worked!!!!
