Craigslist Scam – Vacation Rentals

I have friends with kids who vacation with family members. They love VRBO. They rent a big house to share with family. I once visited them at a nice house in Del Mar when they came to San Diego.

I’ve used VRBO both domestically (Santa Barbara, Sonoma, Kauai etc) and internationally (Italy).
Like anything over the internet – it pays to research… I look for properties that have been reviewed – either with VRBO or Trip Advisors. In looking for reviews I often find that the person is listed with more than one site/agency… and sometimes I can find a better price by booking through a self published site… So that’s a win-win.

Most places that have been vacation rentals for a while have reviews and an internet “history”.

I have used VRBO for Mexico, Hawaii, Big Bear, Mammoth, Napa, Germany and Italy and have never had any problem. Not saying it is fool proof, but you have to pay to list on VRBO which seems for now to keep the scammers away, although I fear that will change.
