I have lost two tenants due to the rat problem, and the house next door to mine also lost their tenant due to the rat problem, and he had two pit bulls… Something needs to be done ASAP! My daughters hear the scurrying around of little feet in the ceiling and walls, and a recent tenant found a dead rat under the refrigerator, it is gross! Vector control only comes out and suggests ways to close up holes and leave a rat trap box, but that does not solve the problems…
And have you closed all the holes? I recommend the old fashioned snap traps (lots of them) and peanut butter. They dig bacon too but it’s too easy to get off the traps without setting them off.
Whatever you do don’t poison them. Dead stinking rats in your wall are the grossest thing ever. Trust me on this. You just need to be persistent to get rid of them. I’ve never had more than one (and not for long) but my Mom has had several invasions because she didn’t close off the holes. She is also hates to kill them. I don’t like killing them either but they are GROSS. I had to throw a hissy fit at my Mom over her “pets” They will chew your wiring, your house will smell nasty and they are a health hazard. Did you know they pee a little every time they take a step?

I recommend using high-pressure to inject peanut butter into the attic of neighbors a block away.

It seems to get worse whenever there is construction in the area–so when you bulldoze a building or have trees removed, you are sending them out to plague your neighbors. Guess that is just how it is.
So, block the holes, have pest control come out with traps and trim trees so that they don’t come near buildings (rat superhighways). These all seemed to help with our problem. They are definitely nasty–they have had their way with our storage area and left us nice presents on anything they chewed their way into. Ick.
