I don’t post here much, more of a reader, but I do know a lot about SD schools, so wanted to respond.
You don’t have to re-apply when you move with choice. Once you are in, you are in that cluster/feeder through high school. However, it is important for you to know (and you probably do know this) that it is almost impossible to choice into LJ schools. My oldest was #3 on the Bird Rock list, and they only took one choice kid in the kindergarten class that year. I have known several people with similar high numbers who did not get in. The principal at Torrey Pines Elementary told the parents at a choice information event that they don’t take anyone and basically, no one’s child was getting in via choice. The principal at LJ Elementary said almost the same thing at an event I attended back when my oldest was going to K. They have to fill their empty spots with VEEP applicants first, and they have very few empty spots. UC will likely be your better bet.
Fortunately, there are a lot of great elementary schools in areas other than LJ, and once your kids are in whatever school you go to, you are going to meet parents who will be a wealth of information about middle and high school, whether it be in that cluster or outside. I know that has been the case for us. My kids are at an elementary in PB, and until your children are in the school, you really cannot know how good or bad it is. I never would have thought when we were considering kindergarten that I would even consider PB Middle as a school, and now, my plan is to send the kids there, and likely MBHS (though several years out).
Good luck! There are a lot of great schools and you will find the right one (and house)!

May 27, 2010 at 11:14 AM #555014ScarlettParticipantI understand that applications for “choice” start in November.
So, to clarify, if the child gets choiced in (elementary school), he CAN stay in that school district thru high school, regardless of subsequent changes of home address?
Another issue – if you just move in spring/summer in a new district, would it be a problem enrolling in the appropriate public school there for the same Fall, or is it too late?
Edit: I wrote this right before the previous post, and I didn’t see it.
Thanks!

[/quote]If you move to a new district (say PUSD or SDUSD) then you would be automatically qualified for the school boundary your new home was in.
If you changed districts in spring/summer and wanted to explore choice options – eh… not so much. The top schools would no longer have slots available.
