I echo what flu said about “quality” of Chinese made products. Chemicals, pesticides. I have a friend who has come down with Parkinsons. She worked as a chemist for years at a major company tha makes everything from health care, pharmaceuticals to beauty products. Many of her colleagues also suffer from neurological diseases, brain cancer, etc. She said the prevailing knowledge amongst the doctors and chemists is that petrochemicals and pesticides cause these diseases.
China grows food using more than 3x pesticide levels than we consider safe. I have many Chinese friends whom DO NOT buy Chinese made products wherever possible and never buy the food. This is because they have Chinese mothers who read the Chinese papers and 10 years ago started reading about quality issues and people getting sick. People need to take it upon themselves to start learning about the chemicals that go into all things in our daily life whether it be the bed you sleep on, the sunscreen you put on your children, in your shampoo, to the food you eat. There were people getting sick in Florida from Chinese made sheet rock.
It doesn’t have to be more expensive to buy non China grown food. You just have to read the labels and shop wisely. Trader Joes generally carries local fresh food, but you do have to be careful reading the boxes on the packaged stuff as ingredients can be from China.
Finally, on non food products such as beauty products, sunscreen, etc…just because it says its organic does not mean it doesn’t contain chemicals as not all ingredients have to be organic. Not regulated by the FDA and not required to test for safety.

June 1, 2009 at 8:18 PM #408769CoronitaParticipant
Please, I ask that no one interpret this thread I posted as me personally against China or prejudice, b/c I am not. Right now I just think given our economy and loss of jobs that it would be best to try to buy American. I think of it as preservation. Now, I don’t necessarily care whether it’s China, Russia, or the planet Mars.
However, at this moment in history China is pervasive throughout the world producing cheap crap that everyone buys and becoming a very strong economy at the suffering of others, including us. So hence, easy focus.
And I am not even blaming them, necessarily. I mean, here we are, American economy suffering at the hands of other countries’ economy, and we still want to buy their stuff. (yes – I know we brought it on ourselves – another topic for another thread)
When it comes right down to it, we are the ones w/the choice and rather than complain, we can just not buy it.
In the end, no one wants to work for cheap, yet many just want to buy cheap.
Anyway, it was an email and I thought for a month, it would be an experiment to try. Curious what the impact would be. I think it would be difficult.
In coming up w/my list, everyday items made here were hard to think of, other than, of course, food. We have a lot of American companies and ingeniuty, but all farmed out.
Edit:
Thought of one more for those of you w/kids.
OshKosh B’Gosh. Though no longer made in WI, sold to Carter’s, but I believe still made in U.S.A.Doing some more checking, Vans is no longer manufactured in CA. Outsourced to Asia. Same w/Converse, no longer made in USA
Jpinpb, thanks for clarifying this. I hope you realize I wasn’t directing this at you, but see again there is a big perception issue on mainstreet about who’s fault this problem really is.
I bought this thing up about chiding some of these company’s CEO for the very issue that some of the boneheaded decisions that these folks are making. And folks who really want to talk about preserving jobs really out to start thinking about boycotting some of these company’s business practices. I won’t name company names here but there are a few short list of companies whom I know in the employment practices are pretty interesting. They offering employment through difficult rigorous selection/interview process. And then if you made it that far, they offer a substandard wage. Obviously, most folks balk at this, and hence that is the reason that often the company then say why that job must be sourced from overseaas (because they can’t find someone to fill that role). Not all companies play this game, but there are some that do. So like i said, as “american” labeled as a company is, I have a hard time not boycotting such american companies that engage in this antics.
I can see myself for instance purchasing a good Ford truck…However, buying from GM is going to be a tough sell for me….Because it is obvious that GM is for the long term is going to be importing cars from both their asia and mexico subsidiaries and increasing those volume year over year. (the terms of the bailout should be obvious now)…June 1, 2009 at 8:18 PM #409011CoronitaParticipant
Please, I ask that no one interpret this thread I posted as me personally against China or prejudice, b/c I am not.
