Go to a Startup Weekend event. Business startup in 54 hours.
I just went to this event a couple of weeks ago. Very cool. If you have a business idea you pitch it to the other attendees. When I went there were ~70 people, ~30 business pitches. Everyone votes on the top 10, then people join whatever project team they want. Developers, graphic artist, moble app guys, marketing, sales etc. People joined teams based on their interest in the project, their talent or to find something to challenge them. Talent gets ‘traded’ too. “We have too many developers & we’ll trade you for a database guy” You can see the results of the last one here http://sandiego.startupweekend.org/
There were a few mobile apps developed during this weekend.
Yes, I use to go to for kicks and giggles… Until it was the perfect breeding ground of otherwise untalented leeches to convince other “can do people” to work for free (for whatever @#$@#$ reason)…Um, no thank you…
There’s two kinds of people that go to this events imho.1) Pushovers
2) LeechesIf you’re good, you don’t need to waste your time making someone else rich….And if you’re good you don’t need to waste your time ripping off someone else’s idea….
In these teams, it’s just hysterical how many people want to be the “project manager”….On one team, there were 5 people that wanted to be simultaneously a PM when there were 1 artist, 1 developer, and 1 db person….And then the person with the “idea” had the balls to say, we want you to work on “my project”, but I want to you to sign an NDA….
Translation: “I have a great idea, with no ability to do it myself, but since you’re a geek with that ability, I want you to work for me…For free…without any stake in the equity/etc in the minute chance the idea turns out to be something….”
…..Any geek wants to participate in such an event under such terms really needs to get his/her head checked and/or really suck and can’t do something similar and get financially comped for it, which brings be to the original point which is that people that do this, don’t really have the means to execute either business-wise or technically….
(end vent…Sorry, some of those “characters” I met really infuriated me at some things. If you’re a geek even remotely thinking of working for free for someone else without some sort of equity arrangement in the bare minimum… you must not value your time very much…Afterall, if you’re going to starve…you might as well starve and enjoy life, rather than starve and work for someone else potentially making them rich )

Do what you love to do, keep doing it, and then keep doing it. Money will come.

March 10, 2011 at 6:40 PM #675811socratttParticipantI’ve got an excellent idea, but I want a piece of the pie. PM me if you are interested and we can talk. I actually have a number of great ideas with not enough time to execute.
