We’ll be able to do it, but it will require discipline. Our goal has always been to retire completely by age 50, but loving life in Southern California means either paying rent to the tune of a couple grand a month for the rest of our lives or buying a place and paying it off, then just paying maintenance and taxes. I like the second choice. The mortgage is the only debt we’ll be carrying, kids college futures are secure (pre-paid plans through state of Florida), so we can focus our income on the mortgage over the coming years.
Thanks for your support, I’m excited! Home inspection this Saturday.

August 7, 2009 at 12:04 AM #442633CBadParticipantCongrats! Any details on what you chose or the area?
Paying off the mortgage at that rate is aggressive but doable. I just paid mine off a couple weeks ago!! (Sorry, not bragging but I haven’t been able to share that with almost anyone in real life.)

The only problem with that is that you will start to like what you do for a living a lot more once you don’t have the pressure of paying off bills (I know it’s just weird).
