I am all for HOA’s too.
I have to admit, I wasn’t sure why people on a housing blog were talking about their HOA’s, but I am sure happy they did.
I never knew you could get one for as little as $42/month.
Mine costs at least that much per hour, and doesn’t even include the cost of the room, never mind cable AND lawn service!

It’s interesting to see such a variance in opinion on this matter. I don’t think we’d ever live somewhere that had a HOA unless we downsized later in life and bought a condo. I figure if you actually own a home, you should be able to do what you like with it. Isn’t that kind of the point of owning it? I realize there can be certain downsides to owning without a HOA but to me the negatives of having one outweigh the lack of one. I guess you just need to pick an established great neighborhood which I know is not a guarantee but so far I guess we’ve been lucky. The majority of the owners around here take great care of their homes but we have a couple POS’s in the mix (which people are eyeballing for teardowns). I like when all of the houses have different styles, landscaping, colors, and elevations. I don’t want to have to count to find my stucco box in another shade of beige, even if I can be 100% sure it doesn’t have Christmas lights up in June.

August 28, 2007 at 8:58 AM #81969Ex-SDParticipantI lived in a SFR in Leucadia for many years and we had an HOA. Sometimes, certain people who had nothing better to do would run for office and become a pain in the butt when they would get on a power trip but overall, if an HOA is not over-managed, they can be a pretty good thing. I’ve had friends who lived in nice areas but with no HOA and some jackass would inherit enough money to afford a nice home and move out of his trailer park and into their beautiful neighborhood. Within a year the yard has gone to pot, the house is not being kept up and the next thing you know, it would affect property values. Given a choice, I would take an HOA for a SFR over not having one since it simplifies these types of problems. Condo’s are another matter since the rules & regulations are usually overwhelming and the people who typically get elected to run the HOA are power-mongers who let it go to their heads.
