I wish we could have a scientist that happens to be female as VP, as Taiwan has.

We too dumb.
Taiwan iq. No. 4
Us. No. 25.
Is the nation mentally decaying?
August 2, 2020 at 1:16 PM #819094zkParticipantThere are so many kinds of smart and so many kinds of stupid. And maybe certain kinds of smart and stupid are more common in men and certain kinds are more common in women.
In most species males and females have different roles as a result of natural selection. There is absolutely no reason to think that humans are any different.
In some species, males spend a lot of time trying to attract mates where females spend a lot of time caring for offspring. Those males don’t do that because they’ve come up with logical reasons for it. And the females aren’t thinking, “why does Jim get to fly around strutting his stuff all day while I’m stuck at home slaving over these screeching brats?” They do their thing because that’s what their instincts tell them to do.
I’m not saying that these are the roles that humans naturally have, and I’m definitely not saying that humans need to behave this way. My point is that nature gave male humans and female humans different roles. And nature did that by giving the male of the species different instincts than the female of the species. Male brains work a little differently from female brains, because those differences were selected by nature for optimal survival of the species.
No matter how much some of us would like there to be no difference between our brains, that just isn’t the case. None of this is to say that we can’t have a society that gives males and females equal opportunity or equal treatment. We can and, in my opinion, we should.
While men and women in general are different, it’s not a binary situation, and there is some overlap. So we can’t judge any individual by their sex. But we can generalize. And, if we want to understand the human condition, I think we must.

We don’t elect a gender for VP, we elect a person. The merits of that person are what they are, regardless of their gender.August 5, 2020 at 12:49 PM #819126scaredyclassicParticipant
Does it really matter ?

The merits of that person are what they are, regardless of their gender.
if women see the world fundamentally different than men, it matters. i think there’s an argument that they actually have different brains. like, people are not all the same.

i think based on my very anecdotal evidence of living with just one female over many years, they a re different. they are “people”, but not the same kind of people as men.
also, women just recently started participating in democracy, as in my gramma couldnt vote in an election when she was young. and even when i was a lad, women were kind of not taken seriously. I remember women still being kind fo a joke when i was young. how they were limited in many ways. i myself thought of women as weak and not suited for many roles. so i think a female vp might have some symbolic value. kind of like female MMA fighting and combat roles are very important.
we are all allegedly equal nowadays. but im not persuaded … when was the point in time when everyone started getting treated equally, blacks, women… 1972? 1986? 1991? or was it a gradual process, where we all became equalified into the current state of utter equality we enjoy today?
when i went to college, the alumni were still upset that women had been admitted to our school. i recall letters to the editor about how outraged they were.
i dont have a daughter, so i dont really have a girl in this fight, but I think the balance of power should switch more to the female type brain. i say this in spite of the fact that dealing with the female brain drives me nuts. but then again, i possess a Male Brain.

No, it doesn’t. Because we only elect 1 person. That person may or may not be an outlier – a woman who is completely different from all other women or a man, completely different from all other men. So, the gender doesn’t matter at all – only their specific traits. Period. It doesn’t matter one little bit. We don’t need a particular gender in the white house, just a particular person.
Regardless, we will probably get a politician who wants to control everyone’s lives and not what we really need.
August 5, 2020 at 1:28 PM #819128scaredyclassicParticipantOk. i think really what you mean is it shouldn’t matter.
it shouldnt matter whether a black guy or a white guy or a woman or a man is elected, because we are all people, all created equal, and all can only choose to act from a certain limited range of human response options available to us all in equal measure.
and i agree with that. but
I think the reality is that while there’s a range of possibilities on how a given man or a woman sees the world, there are qualities unique to being a woman that make that range different than men.
so while i agree, from a perspective of how the world ought to be, we all ought to be judged on the content of our viewpoints, i think the reality is, just as we select our final candidate based on emotion, the candidate is also emotion and hormone driven.
therefore, sex matters.
(i wonder if “fear of being controlled” is largely a male fear? or if it is a fear spread equally among the sexes, whetehr or not the type or nature of control that is feared varies widely in distribution across sexes.)
i feel extremely controlled having been raised as a child in a particular society. the govt was the least of it!
August 5, 2020 at 8:43 PM #819135svelteParticipantI’m with sdduuuude…
I was raised to treat men and women totally equally, and I do.
I’ve had about equal number of female bosses vs male bosses over the years and have not really noticed much of a difference with rare exception when I’ve come across a manly man and girly girl. Most of them were just flat bosses who behaved about the same as their counterparts of the opposite sex.
I’ve also noticed that more often than not I end up with more females on my staff than the m/f ratio within the company would suggest. I’ve often wondered if that was by chance or if there is something going on that I’m not noticing. It could be (a) mgt has noticed that I treat all equally and help direct females my way, or (b) perhaps the employees have noticed and have come my way because of it. Or perhaps it is chance. I’ll never know.
Likewise away from work I treat people the same and our set of friends don’t really include any manly men or girly girls…we tend to gravitate people who treat people as people.
As much as I’m not for affirmative action (it does exactly what I’ve been taught not to do – it treats people differently) I do feel it is high time we have a female at the top of our government. There are as many good female candidates as there are men, and I’d like to see that glass ceiling (a term I dislike but it fits) broken.
The one and only female boss that I felt favored females, her and I had a long talk about it. She ended up agreeing with me that she did, and made a genuine effort to be more impartial in decisions. I can respect that. I remember she even laughed when I explained how it is unacceptable to be biased toward either males or females in all aspects of life save one – because if we were unbiased in all aspects we’d all be bisexuals.
