I don’t think it is an Asian thing. A house is an asset that can’t be taken away or destroyed as easily as cash or some promissory note and it can always feed a family as a rental.
I think that it’s an immigrant thing rather than an Asian thing.
Like I said, immigrants are more willing to spend a larger portion of their incomes on housing.
There are sociological reasons for that such as:
1. Easy access to credit in America. In their home countries, they have to pay cash (Credit has only recently been available to the middle class in the developing world).
2. Opportunity to live like a rich person in their own country — a baronial lifestyle, with castle (house), domain (yard) and carriage (car). Europeans were attracted to America for the same reasons.
In my opinion, people (immigrants or native-born) who have made it from nothing are generally more willing to spend on things that are statements that they have made it.
That’s the same reason people who have “made it” tend to spend a larger portion of their incomes on cars. Next step up is a house.
Easy access to credit in America makes it easy for people to achieve the American Dream.
Culturally, people who have recently made it prefer tangible things. For example, they would rather eat at restaurants that provide good food. They are less likely to pay for ambiance and design. They like their hotels big and grand like in Vegas. They would not pay for small boutique hotels with good design and service.
Immigrants like new houses. Give them houses with luxury touches – marble and granite counter tops, Greco-Roman columns and crown moldings galore.
Immigration is good for house prices!!
