I have a Japanese friend with whom I went to college.
When times were flush, even up to the late 1990s, he would come to California regularly just to attend horse shows. He used to boast that his family owned their land for many generations.
By the late 1990s the stagnation in Japan was setting in already… it took about a decade to sink in to the national psyche. My friend has not come back to California since about 2002. Instead his travels are now only within Asia where it’s cheaper.
Muji is a Japanese chain that means “no-brand”. They have nice discounted stuff (like Crate and Barrel at Ikea and Walmart prices). Very popular in Japan these days.
Seiyu (Walmart Japan) is doing quite well too.
