GuestThe grand economic bargain in America was that in exchange for a lower employment rate (more employed people), we have a weak social safety net, as compared to Europe.
Now we are having European style unemployment and a weak social safety net.
If such unemployment persists for years, the Europeans, as a whole, would have gotten a better bargain.
Time will tell what the future brings…

CoronitaParticipantI have a general question..
On this board, I read a lot about folks donating aid to people in other countries. I also see a lot of rant about how the government is stealing money away from main street and how desperate some people are living in conditions similar to the great depression and how the government should do more to help people. And now we read about folks pitching tents in parking lots, some with kids…
Out of curiosity, have anyone considered helping some of these people out?
I’ll admit, I haven’t….Something bothered me on the way home…While I was parked at an intersection, I saw a man with and apparently his little son, holding up signs saying “will work for food”….I didn’t think much of it at the time and just drove through the intersection when the light turned green… But then when I looked back, and saw the boy and his dad(I assume), it really bothered me…See, I would have had no qualms donating money to some girl scout or boy scout event, or buying my kid’s friends birthday present.. But why did I drive through the intersection without doing anything? I wasn’t alone either…I’m just wondering if we have become so indifferent and callous about helping each other in this country out? Is it really every man/woman for himself/herself now?

Participantwe don’t have a tradition of begging in this country. i think we have a visceral reaction to begging that other cultures might not. we are flooded with feelings of shame. it desn’t feel good i think for most americans to give to a panhandler. not sure what other countries are like.
also, how much could you give him that woulda made a difference? comtemplating his reality is really scary. safer not to think on it. at least that’s the reflex.
recently watched the move THE BICYCLE THIEF again. very classic italian film about work and desperation. truly moving and beautiful…available on netflix. seems very relevant.
the other problem is we are afraid to come in contact with each other. it’s ascam, potentially, a setup. maybe that panhandler wants to kill or rob us. driving in automobiles is not as pandhandlable as say, people with awalkable street culture. i dont know. we’re just not set up for this.
these ar ejust random thoughts, not sur eif im makking sense
