I haven’t read what he’s proposing blocking, but in California it’s amazing. A friend of mine just received another extension – which will take her to 2 years of unemployment benefits. She loves it. They file the extensions automatically for her. Until the benefits come to an end, she has no reason to find a job. If they decided to block her extension of benefits, I don’t see how she could argue that she was being thrown under the bus.[/quote]
She loves it? Really? Somehow I doubt that. I don’t know anyone who would rather be receiving unemployment benefits as opposed to having an actual job.
Not sure if you’ve heard, but unemployment is around 10% (~20% for U6), so it’s not like there are just jobs out there for the taking. Most likely, unless your friend is independently wealthy, she is probably stressed because she doesn’t know when the government is going to cut off her unemployment benefits and there is no work to be found.
If the U.S. government can spend trillions bailing out the crimninal banker class, surely it can spend a few billion to make sure those who can’t find jobs are able to eat.

February 28, 2010 at 6:52 PM #519134scaredyclassicParticipanttheres gotta be a limit to unemployment, doesn’t there? I mean, 20 years of unemployment is obviosuly too much. 10 years too. so what’s a reasonable limit? 7? 5? or whatever it takes? at some point can we stop calling it unemployment and start calling it welfare though?

February 28, 2010 at 7:33 PM #519144paramountParticipantWe would have to create 200,000 jobs a month for the next 7 years to create a job for every person currently out of work.
We are at a pivotal moment in history – record numbers of unemployed and uninsured. I wish the Republicans would just come out and say we don’t care about the unemployed and the uninsured, because that is the truth.
The only way out of this situation is to cut taxes deeply across the board and create temporary gov’t jobs.
In recent history the gov’t at various levels has been working hard to destroy private business and employment prospects – particularly in California. The private sector will not create nearly enough jobs to employ the currently unemployed.
In fact, we are still loosing jobs every month.
I firmly believe we will be going into a deep deep depression the likes of which the world has never experienced.
Endless wars, endless spending, endless debt, financial “innovation” – stick a fork in us were done.
