You know, I never get the can’t hang pictures, paint, plant things, put up curtains, or do anything to my rental comments.
Maybe it’s just me, but I just got done drilling 6 huge holes and 4 small ones in my (landlord’s) wall so I could install a swell LCD TV. I hang pictures of my family and art that I like.
Own it or rent it, I’m probably going to end up cleaning up the “damage” after I leave. At least I always have so far. On the house I sold, I had a couple of days of work based on what the buyers requested and I wouldn’t leave to the next owner even if they didn’t ask.
On the house I rented, it was a couple of hours, tops. Spackle and paint just ain’t that hard. Heck, I’d even painted a room and asked the owner if he wanted me to put it back to white. Instead, he said his wife liked the color and wondered if I could paint a few other rooms too–I told him the paint color.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of owning my own place again so I can truly do whatever I want. Tear out bathrooms and kitchens; piss away thousands and thousands of dollars–and love every minute of it. But it’s going to be a place that I love and I’m not going to get ripped off for it.
Million dollar tract homes, $700K fixers, give me a frickin’ break. I’ll continue to live in “terror” of my landlord for just a bit longer… and, oh yeah, in the best area I have ever lived since moving to San Diego.
