With working full time, running a business on the side, and looking after two very small kids, I have virtually no life as it is, so a new home project interrupts valuable relaxation time. My gardener (also a sprinkler installer) recently pointed out a leaky valve, and said I should fix it myself, because “the part’s cheap and it’s easy.” He gave me instructions and told me what to ask for at Home Depot. I paid him to do it for me.
I’ll replace a doorknob, reverse the door on the fridge/dryer, put on a new shower head. Beyond that, my time is more valuable (to me) than any contractor, even if I spend it on the couch.
That said, I do feel that a real man should know how to fix toilet innards, so you have to do that job at least once.
