With the expected high voter turnout this year, I’m hoping the Libertarian party will pick up some more votes. I don’t expect a Libertarian to ever come close to winning a US Presidential election, but maybe if they can get enough votes, the other parties will open an ear towards their (re: small-government, fiscally-conservative, socially-open) views.
There was a time when I leaned Republican because I could put up with fear-mongering and religious dogma, even if I despised it, because I thought Republican economic policies were sound. These days I realize “no new taxes,” or “responsible government,” or “free market” are Republican-party-salesmen’s lies. The Republicans are as big-government as the Democrats. One need look no further than the current administration’s 8 years of government-expanding actions or the current “Republican” candidate’s pitch to buy back bad loans.
In reality, the current Republican party stands for a constrained market moderated by an irresponsible government that will need massive new tax income to pay for its own horrible debt. Sadly, the Democrats are worse.
