With regards to Ph.D.’s, they really have to look out when they lose their job whether it’s because of company going belly up, moving, or having a murder…I mean merger. Due to the specialization of many of the areas, the biotech community may be too small in San Diego if you lose your job at the Ph.D. level.
BTW, I lived next door to a doctor (in CV) who was forced to sell (at a profit, but priced way below market for quick sale because of relocation), so the profession doesn’t always matter.
