Isn’t Santee the place with the school shooting spree and all the confederate flags?…
Yes, unfortunately bad things always leave a lasting memory on people’s mind. I’ll start with the easier one first.
No, Santee is not a town where the confederate flags are waved everywhere. Maybe it once was but it must have been 10+ years ago. As a ethnic minority, I’ve never felt uncomfortable or threatened going to Santee.
The school shooting is no doubt a great tragedy but that can happened anywhere, to anyone of any profession. The greater San Diego has it fare share of deadly tragedies over the past 30 years. We don’t avoid McDonald because of the shooting that took place 24 years ago in San Ysidro. Rancho Santa Fe is still a premium neighborhood despite the Heaven’s Gate mass suicide. And SDSU professors don’t quit because of fear that some mad student may kill them, as happened in 1996.
These tragedies are etched into our memory and may last forever. But we shouldn’t discredit a school or a town just so easily. Or else we should all be very afraid to go to the Post Office as we never know if someone will go “postal”.
