This is classic press spin. He had financial trouble, so he did it. If he had a “history of mental issues”, he would have also been discredited, along with any host of other things that might discredit him.
The only true fact I heard, came from an interview with the CHP officer who assisted. He said he saw the brake lights, and could smell the brakes burning, but the car was NOT slowing down. Personally, I believe him!
