The movie the Truman Show is a parody of modern living. Life is compared to a soap opera, where the allusion of the perfect world is re-enacted, so that real people can escape the humdrum for a piece of urban Utopia. The American Dream thus becomes a parody of itself, and becomes supplanted by illusion. This has relevance for so many of the new housing developments that appear to have been designed more for the front cover of a glossy marketing brochure, where framing the privileged viewpoint, conveniently discards the true physical surroundings. The fact that the Gardena photo reminds someone of this movie is very poignant don’t you think? The Matrix has stronger parallels to religion, but is still focussed on life as an illusion, created by evil superior controlling forces …I wonder who they may be?
