The dogs are still kept within the department. They’re just at the K9 facitlity. The dogs are worked w/other handlers, just not in the field. That’s my understanding. The dogs are not given away. (They cannot sell the dogs. Liability. The dogs will attack you. The dogs obey only the handlers. They’re police dogs – not pets)
I can understand horses were a luxury. Most departments are getting rid of horse patrol due to high cost. But I think the dogs were good. Most criminals for some reason really fear the dogs. Dogs are effective in sniffing and tracking.
I think it is a shame they cut the dogs and the public will suffer eventually. I am frustrated w/the way the City is cutting services and so much more. I ride my Vespa down streets and sometimes the street potholes are so bad, I think it’ll swallow my bike. Luckily I know the bad spots and dodge them.
And yet at the same time, w/furloughs and layoffs and cuts, the City is still talking about a stadium.
It’s odd that the PGA can infuse upwards of 20 million dollars into the economy (not verified, but that’s what they allege) but at the same time the City is losing 200k for the use of the course during the newly coined Farmers Insurance Open.
It’s great that the PGA can infuse that much money into the economy, but if they want to use a public course, the City should not go into the hole for 200k when they don’t have the money to fix potholes.
In addition to horses and dogs, they also cut the boat unit entirely. That one I have trouble understanding, b/c the boats were funded by the Federal government.
