Speaking of AT&T, I’ve heard terrible things about them for years, and I’ll be the first customer to jump ship if/when I start getting calls dropped, but that just never happens to me. I’ve never had a problem with them, and in fact have made calls in the middle of nowhere in Baja and even Death Valley. Connection and sound quality has a lot to do with your phone/antenna, not just your network. Research phones before you buy, and get one where the “phone” feature is well-reviewed and not just added as an afterthought to a very small computer. In other words, if it is to be used primarily as a phone, you don’t want an iPhone.
