SO, you told a realtor that you want her to find a resale house for you. You also told her that you are also considering a new house, and that if you go the new house route, you will not use her, but will use your father-in-law instead.
From her perspective it might sound like you are a “flaky” buyer. I recommend that you figure out whether you want to buy resale or new before employing her.
