SDR, I STILL maintain that our country and state can grow/produce TWICE the food we are producing, not for export but for use right here.
Begin writing your legislators and insist that these central valley farmers be put back to work! When this land starts producing again, food and commodity prices will come down.
There is no excuse for US citizens to go hungry.
Maybe there should be more education on how to properly use an EBT card to get more bang for your buck. It can be used for ANY “edible” so I see people buying all kinds of “empty calorie” items with them. The only program that is currently strict with specific eligible lists of items (but ignoring price of the item) is WIC.
I really think every citizen who is eligible is getting EBT and/or WIC (even lower-ranking military families). The amount of their monthly award is based upon the number of persons in their household.
Local educational programs on shopping economically and cooking from scratch are available in the South County and probably in other areas as well. Having knowledge in both of these areas is key to stretching your food dollar, IMO.
Lots of folks are already being given fish but they may need to be taught, “how to fish.” :=}
