I think the problem lies not so much with the goal of gathering and consuming as many nuts as we can stuff into our pouches, but our willingness to use whatever means necessary to get those nuts. If it means getting up early and being the first tail on the ground then we usually think that’s a trait of a virtuous squirrel. However, it we’re talking about stealing those nuts from the next tree over then that’s something only a bad squirrel would do.
Having run that analogy into the ground…
Consumption by itself isn’t inherently bad, but overconsumption beyond one’s means is the epitome of bad. The only thing that’s worse is blaming our problems on others, a trait which often accompanies the sin of overconsumption.
