We will see telecom hammered as consumers cut back spending on wireless.
Like I said before, families don’t need $200/month wireless bills.
3G will be a financial failure as carriers are unable to sell services and recoup their investments. That will affect equipment makers such as Nortel and Qualcomm as well.
I think that T-Mobile which invested the least in 3G but concentrated on price and service will come out best among the carriers.
I foresee collapsing business investments in telecom as well. Routers and such technologies only drop in price. No need in invest today when in a few years you can get the same at 1/5 the price.
Think of the businesses who paid through the nose for fiber networks back in the late 1990s. Now you can get gigabit ethernet to the desktop for cheap.
It’s easy to spend money when the capital is plentiful. But much harder when you have to judiciously allocate operating cash flow.
