It has been around for quite a while, particularly when there wasn’t much fiber around. I can’t remember the name of the company that used to do that. I don’t think it exists anymore. There is a problem transferring in open air – due to atmospheric distortion causing scintillation (that shimmering you see looking through a telescope). It wrecks havoc with high data rates.
