John: I think it was the F-106 that Dubya flew. It might have been a death trap, but it fired nuclear air-to-air missiles! That is just too cool.
I definitely wouldn’t be a good choice for that aircraft. Too much temptation.
Speaking of “Duke” Cunningham: He was a fighter ace in the F-4 Phantom and that is no small achievement, especially when going up against the more maneuverable MiG 17s, 19s and 21s that the North Vietnamese flew.
My dad worked on the Phantom project when he was at McDonnell-Douglas and he had a picture on his desk with the caption: “The F-4 Phantom: Proof that if you put big enough engines on a brick, it will fly!”.
