I don’t know about the kids feeling burdened by helping disadvantaged children. My kid is in a situation where he is helping an ESL kid. I asked him if it bothered him. He said it didn’t. The third grade is going to be way too easy for him anyway. He can be a little selfish and I think it could be good for him in a “value added” sort of way. I tell him that I am proud of him for helping his classmate.
You are very fortunate to have such a nice son, Rustico. Based on many of your posts, I’m sure you guys are doing a great job with your kids.
My comment was based on my experience as a teacher. We all pair kids up like this to some extent, but I’ve had kids (and their parents — especially their parents!) complain that they were being punished for being well behaved or academically advanced. It’s just a tough situation for teachers because the logistics do require these sorts of pairings in many cases.
