It’s still Escondido on the ocean, just some new neighborhoods towards the East that are nicer than the old ‘hoods. One thing if you’ve been gone 8 years is that the traffic is a lot worse now (if you haven’t noticed already). I moved to North Carlsbad in 99′ and the drive was a breeze, but by 2005 it had become a slow slog down the coast. If you work up there, great, you can get a lot more for your money, but if you work around the 52, you’re going to be seeing a lot of bumpers in the morning and the evening.
I agree with SD Realtor that O’side has a ways to fall, it’s not the most desirable area (schools, gangs, about 3-4 Walmarts) and it’s hella’ far up there.
