I had a few long term relationships, cohabitating for over 7 years. No ring ever involved. I couldn’t care less about having one. But I am not a typical female. I’m not a consumer. I’m not into status or material things or anything else society tries to push on people.
My husband insisted on getting me one. I told him not to, but he did anyway. I think it is more for him, putting others on notice that I am taken. Of course, married people unfortunately have affairs. Not that I ever would. But the notion of wearing a ring to advise others you’re not available, well, that practice is much more amusing to me.
Perhaps a band, once married, I can understand the symbolism.
