I am sure if they really wanted to keep the program, they could have asked for sponsorships. I think the economy was a good excuse to ditch the program. The horses are valuable because of their training and should not be eaten. The dogs are also valuable and if anyone would get them it would probably be the handlers who would pay the City back for some of the cost of the dog. At a certain age the dogs are retired and they do not get the DROP. I agree it is going to be a loss for the City over time. The dogs are extremely valuable and some are trained to track which can be useful when looking for lost children or Alzheimer’s patients.
