I read an interesting article a few years back which would give me concern about Bay Park. The southern end of Bay Park (just east of Sea World Drive and extending north) has had a significantly higher percentage than normal of residents who developed leukemia/cancer. From what I recall, the landfill located on what is now the south end of Mission Bay Park (parallel to the river) was used as a dump for toxic chemicals many decades ago and apparently the toxicity got into the soil and water below the ground. In fact, that very same area still is vacant today – makes you wonder why the city/county has yet to build on the property considering its prime location.
