General fund spending breakdown from the original 2008-09 budget, excepting K-12 (which is, as we all know, underfunded compared to the rest of the country and we probably don’t want to cut K-12 any deeper than we are):
Health and Human Services 49.6%
Higher Education 19.3%
Corrections and Rehabilitation 16.5%
Legislative, Judicial, Executive 6.1%
Other 8.5%
In the HHS category, 40% of money goes to Medi-Cal and 20-25% to the Department of Social Services.
Higher Education category is almost entirely comprised by subsidies to UC/CSU/community college programs in order to keep the education affordable for locals.
