One of the most interesting observations regarding this earthquake is how the Japanese reacted to it vs. how Californians react to earthquakes.
In the videos, the Japanese seemed to have so much faith in their engineering that they would just stand there in the middle of the room, seemingly calm and fairly relaxed. In California, we were all trained to quickly dive under heavy furniture or stand in doorways. In every earthquake I’ve experienced in a public place, people are running around, panicking like mad. The Japanese, not so much.
Just interesting.
As for the engineering and EQ preparedness, can you imagine if an earthquake like this would have hit an area with out their building codes? This is why I’m all for strict regulations. Yes, it might slow things down and reduce profits, but it is so worth it when you see something like what happened in Japan. My heart goes out to those poor people.
