I know that I’ve cleared my calendar so as to be available for the live televised coverage of Lisa receiving the 11th hour phone call from the White House while Rahm Emanuel and Tim Geithner are outside her front door with balloons and an oversized cardboard check.
Just about blew Coke Zero out my nose on that one! That is a great mental picture.
I’ve coached youth football for several years now, and I’ll tell you that you are right on the money when it comes to a lot of these parents/families. I also coached a year of T-Ball when my son was 6, and I remember parents coming up and asking if their son had what it took to play Major League Baseball. Unfortunately, the question was seriously posed.
I’ve seen moms and dads who obsessively biograph their child’s youth football “career” through video and photos and I don’t mean just shooting the game with a camcorder. They keep their child’s stats, shoot multiple angles of a game (this is where mom and dad each have a camcorder and shoot from different sides of the field) and literally document every aspect of his performance. There is a method to the madness, though, as explained to me by one 7th grader’s mom: She wanted her son to go to a good Division 1 university, like Michigan, Cal or Ohio State, and was preparing “scouting material”. The kid in question would’ve had a hard time hitting water falling out of a boat, but mom was convinced he was the next Peyton Manning.
At some point, like with Lisa and her spawn, you cross over into the Twilight Zone. She is totally oblivious to what we here would call “reality” and probably does believe that Obama will hear her cries of help and come to her aid.
