To be honest, we are buying where and what we are buying because we can, not because I think it is the only way to raise my kids right or do right for my kids. In fact, I have always been concerned about my kids growing up in too comfortable and privilaged an environment for fear that they may develop a sense of entitlement and lack work ethic. This is because I grew up feeling lucky in my societally impoverished youth and give credit to that youth and how my mom raised me for my success as an adult.
For me the answer is not to wish my kids grew up as I did. I don’t. It was not all roses and petals. The answer is that I have to actually try to be a good enough parent to make sure they learn those same lessons some other way. If they don’t learn their lessons it is all on me and their mother.
