. . . I consider myself frugal and borderline cheap, but I would fix my roof or carpet! My car is 2001 and paid off, but it’s in excellent shape and well maintained. Once I had a small dent in it, and I had it fixed right away. It should run fine for another 10-15 years. (I put in less than 7000 miles a year b/c my frugality dictates that I live as close to work as possible). . . .
Diego, I would fix those things too (at least the roof, before it got THAT bad). My car is a ’94 which I purchased from a private party for cash in ’99. I just bought yet another set of tires (+ alignment) for it and fixed a longstanding transaxle leak. It’s ready to roll for another long road trip!!
I put 9K to 11K miles on my car per year but ONLY because I take it on several long road trips throughout the year! At less than 190K miles, it’s still a baby/young child!!
I have a relative whose income is about $170K per year who rotates his driving between his three greatly-loved “early ’80’s” sedans.
I’m with you, life’s too short to commute and I am too cheap with my gas and time to pay for the privilege!
