[quote=davelj]I have some friends who have a son that was a very mediocre high school student (with marginal test scores). He went to one of the local community colleges for two years, did reasonably well (mostly A’s and B’s), applied to UCSD and was accepted, with credits transferred, without incident. I think it only took him two years to graduate from UCSD. If this kid is any indication, going the community college route is both cheaper and easier. It seems a hell of a lot easier than applying with every kid that wants into the system straight out of high school.
My entire family did this, and we had no problem transferring. As a matter of fact, if you were a trasnfer student, you got priority over everyone else for scheduling (except for graduating seniors, IIRC). Nowhere on our degree certificates does it say anything about not attending for the full four years.
I know a HS counselor, and asked her why all the parents push their kids to compete for the four-year universities out of high school when they can do the CC-univ thing. She laughed and mentioned the whole “dorm life” thing, which I think is ridiculous. We had a lot more fun renting rooms in private, off-campus party houses. 😉
