davelj – thanks. Government has been wanting to kill Prop 13 since day 1. The reality is this: Over this past decade – yes, decade for sure – many, many homes have been turned over, not even counting the new ones constructed. Some places from start to peak have close to doubled. That means property taxes have doubled. God forbid you were stupid enough to sell a house you bought in the ’80’s – yes, there were some that did – b/c goodbye Prop 13 for you.
The bottom line is the gov wants to blame Prop 13, b/c they can claim they’re not getting enough money for services and cast blame on that, but they have generated substantial property tax revenue over the past decade and I for one would like to know what the hell they did w/it.
They are professional magicians. Did every red cent go to the ballpark? It didn’t go to fix streets or sewer, that’s for sure. People’s wages certainly didn’t double over the past 10 years, so they’re not paying police, fire, parks, etc, double in 10 years. Sure like to know what expenses they had. It wasn’t the new library.
