Allan, I didn’t say we should ban loud-mouths from speaking.
I just wondered what’s preferable. Isn’t calm, polite conversation better than rant, bluster and hyperbole?
I think that you’re implying that politically correct speak discourages certain speech. Perhaps.
But as a conservative, don’t you think that society has always had certain standards of behavior that people should (but are not forced) to adhere to? Standards of decency certainly shape the culture and the outcomes.
Those that control the language, control the control. And, to Leftists, this is what it’s all about.
I think that right is better at controlling the language. In fact, I feel that the Church controls the language in this country. Any politician that omits “God bless America” at every speech is automatically labeled Anti-American. Anyone who doesn’t believe in God is not to be trusted.
We can talk more about controlling the language when God is no longer shoved down our throats. I’m gagging right now.
Oh, let’s not forget about the flag lapel pin that everyone needs to wear these days. You don’t love America if you don’t wear a pin.
Brian: I’ll gladly concede your point regarding the Hard Right and false patriotism. The radical elements in both parties sicken me.
I’m all for a reasoned discourse and, yes, let’s take God and false “love of country” off the table, along with Political Correctness. No ONE has a corner on patriotism and those that assert they love America more than others are as disgusting as those that assert they hate America without any basis (other than currying favor.)
Political Correctness is more insidious to me, however, because it attempts to control our culture by controlling the language and what words are “right” versus “wrong”. To use a religious analogy, it would be the same as asserting you have NO right to speak unless you couch your language in religious, God-friendly terms. You’d find that pretty galling, wouldn’t you?
All of this is fairly easily solved by removing ALL intrusions into our rights and liberties and simply leaving us alone to pursue life, liberty and happiness (providing that said “happiness” doesn’t impinge on the rights of others.)
