Allan and Aecetia, if those who don’t want health care shouldn’t have to pay for it, what about those who don’t want to pay for war (or to feed the military industrial complex)? Is there a way for us to opt out?
How about the socialism that is the military?
Brian: I’m not sure how I’m being dragged into the healthcare debate, especially since I haven’t offered up an opinion, one way or the other on it.
As to not supporting the military-industrial complex, I would think you vote your conscience on that one. As a former soldier, I deeply distrust my government and the sprawling American corporate monoculture that controls it. However, the issue, like most issues, is more complex than that, especially when you get into the necessity of winning WWII and the Cold War. The size of the programs needed to achieve those ends wound up creating the very companies (including those in banking and finance that pushed the money) that are a problem now.
As to the military being socialist, I’ll profess I’m not entirely sure what you mean there. If you explain it further, I’d be happy to answer. The only truly socialist military I have any experience with is the French and they have those really neat hats, so I don’t think they’re all bad.
