We often hear the claim that financial issues are the biggest cause of divorce. But I suggest that financial problems are the symptom, not the cause, of marital discord.
More likely, the cause is two people unable or unwilling to plan, or to share financial decisionmaking, or to not resist rampant consumerism and advertising. Of course two such people will have financial problems, and our superficial news journalists will blame it all on the recession, or the housing meltdown, or that old favorite, G.W. Bush. Look for more such shallow analysis in the months ahead.
