As far as huge SUV’s go, I have a Ford Excursion and I love it – even with $3.50 gas.
Reasons: I have a PUP camper and the Excursion is perfect for towing and bringing all of our stuff along without breaking a sweat.
Also, if you drive a small car in So. Cal. basically you get no respect – not the case in the Excursion. Very low stress driving.
Safety: I will always drive the safest vehicle I can afford to drive (or what I think is the safest vehicle), I don’t care what gas costs. I do care about other peoples safety very much, but at the end of the day my primary job is to protect my family – and that’s what I’ll do. Of course I don’t drive it all of the time, but it is our main family vehicle.
Global warming: I am all for reducing pollution and I do carpool to work (with 3 other riders, 4 in total) nearly everyday. But it’s all irrelevant to you if your dead, after getting in an accident in your eco car.
In general, the heavier the vehicle the safer it is.
