@AN — East Village = no decent public transport, and it feels like most of SD with exception of maybe PB is deadsky after 9 pm. SF is more of a late-night town, though nothing compared to Manhattan or Brooklyn. SF also seems to have a lot of damn smart people, better (the best?) tech scene, more cultural events, and location on the edge of an urban zone if you head north.
