Bearish: I’ve been a huge Eagles fan since I was old enough to love rock and roll. Being a California kid, their songs always resonated with me, especially “Hotel California” (although, I didn’t fully understand this song till I was older).
My remark about Lahaina was less geared to the place, and more towards the sentiment it expressed in the song and the poignancy of the lyric. The whole song is imbued with a tremendous weight, with references to Providence (not the place, but the spirituality); its revulsion towards hypocrisy, especially of the religious sort; and the recognition that we’ve reaped as we’ve sown (“brought the white man’s burden down, brought the white man’s reign”).
Agreed, Allan. I think The Last Resort also refers to the rampant unplanned and poorly thought-out development of coastal CA, especially the LA basin.
I just listened to 1 minute each of all the songs on Hotel California on i-tunes. ALL of these songs bring back a lot of memories for me :=]
My overplayed Hotel California album (vinyl) from my early 20’s as well as my Hell Freezes Over CD have become “waylaid” somewhere along the line. I just ordered replacement CDs on Amazon as I need some *new* content for my trunk-mounted CD player for my road trip(s) coming up!
