I think what most people object to most is the monopolitic nature of the MLS system. IMHO, the information should be transparent and freely available to the public. That would be a more “free market” approach because people would not feel as though they are beholden to the NAR interests.
As you know, there is a movement that is trying to hide listings, and they are pushing it even more now. Also, as I’m sure you’re aware, the NAR and related associations were trying to black-ball the discount agencies, and have been trying to keep the discount agencies from seeing their listings — as well as trying to steer buyers away from discount agencies’ listings.
Additionally, the NAR has prevented the banks and lenders from working directly with buyers. For instance, I cannot easily go to a lender and ask for their REO department and buy properties directly from them. They are forced to use realtors for their RE transactions. That’s a direct result of a long and hard-fought lobbying effort by the NAR. It is NOT in the clients’ best interests.
