Agreed every situation is different. The original landlords are usually never inclined to skip rent so yes they keep people in. However I took from the op that he was more concerned that the new landlord is going to flip the home. Thus if indeed the new landlord was going to flip the home I think he would offer cash for keys.
Also even with trustee sales, actually tenant/squatters are OBLIGATED to pay rent under the lease terms or else evictions can start immediately. However if they do pay the rent then the landlords hands are tied.
