It just depends what you need for your yard and garage.
No driveway in front : I see lot of people park their cars on driveway and garage is just a big storage only. Driveway in front makes people have a habit to park their cars outside and less street parking space. Garage/covered parking is supposed to protect your car from sun and rain so your car can last longer.
Courtyard only: I know some people buying there, because CA is short of water and water bill will go up more, they don’t want a big yard with high water bill . Also, 4S has lots of parks around. They would like their kids go to parks rather than playing inside their backyard (buying their own swing, slides….).
It seems the 4S community design is to let families enjoy the public facilities and communicate with neighbors so lot of houses there have small backyard or courtyard only.
